The second edition of FIC.A – International Science Festival, took place between 10 and 16 of October 2022, at the Hub-Act in Oeiras, for more than 18,500 students from local schools. With more than 100 academic, scientific, technological, diplomatic, governmental and non-governmental entities, the festival has had thousands of activities, such as debates, lectures, exhibitions, shows, concerts, workshops and training, on important scientific topics.
The member of the Aluns Project, Inês Marques, carried out the hands-on activity ‘River trees also get sick: from diagnosis to treatment’. The students were able to experience the different phases of a scientific investigation in the components of dendrology and forest pathology, in the context of river ecology and ecological restoration. They made measurements directly in alnus plants, tried to isolate a critical disease for these riverside trees from samples collected in the field, and discussed the methods of management of this disease in Portugal rivers.
