The ninth factsheet of the RIVEAL project starts a series of information documents introducing the ecosystem services provided by rivers and riparian vegetation considered for analysis in the project’s tasks. This factsheet – Riparian carbon – features the amount of carbon that has been sequestered from the atmosphere and is stored within the riparian ecosystem. Riparian carbon storage varies along environmental gradients and for different riparian species, being furthermore influenced by local factors like floodplain width, gradient of inundation, valley geometry, channel morphology and flow regime.
