LISBON
Lisbon, the Portuguese capital, is located on the right bank of the wide estuary of the Tagus River. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and the second oldest European capital (after Athens).
Lisbon is rich in monuments (such as the Medieval São Jorge Castle, the Medieval Sé Cathedral, the Belém Tower, and the Jerónimos Monastery), typical neighborhoods (such as Baixa Pombalina, Belém, Bairro Alto, Chiado, Bica, Alfama, and Mouraria), riverside areas, Fado houses, parks, gardens, and viewpoints (including Eduardo VII Park, Monsanto Forest Park, Ajuda Botanical Garden, Lisbon Botanical Garden, Estrela Garden, Tapada da Ajuda, among many others).
Lisbon's cuisine is strongly influenced by its proximity to the sea. Thus, the city's typical specialties include codfish patties (pataniscas de bacalhau), battered vegetables (peixinhos da horta), and sardines grilled on bread (especially during the Popular Saints Festival in June). The famous Café Steak (Bife à Café) is also considered a food highlight of the capital. The most famous sweet in Lisbon is the traditional Pastel de Nata, made in an old factory in the Belém district, more commonly known as Pastel de Belém.
