This work of ~8 years in the Alqueva irrigation canals shows that:

• Irrigation canal overpasses have higher crossing rates by carnivores than culverts;

• landscape composition affects animal crossings;

• irrigation projects alter land uses and these alter animal crossing rates;

• these interactions must be considered in mitigating the barrier effect of irrigation canals.
