The protocol established between the Environmental Fund, ICNF and ISA (and its partners) aims to develop the first activities under the ProROLA plan. The medium and long-term strategic objective of this Action Plan is to help reverse the decline of the common turtle-dove (Streptopelia turtur) in the western European migration corridor. This plan focuses on updating knowledge about the populations that we welcome into our territories every year, as well as the decline factors and threats facing the species, particularly during the breeding season.  These actions will provide scientific support for the implementation of conservation and management measures under the species' adaptive management plan at national and international level. Efforts will be coordinated on an Iberian and international scale, in particular through the implementation of harmonised actions on the ground and the sharing of information and monitoring/research results. ProROLA is designed to articulate various objectives over several years:

Objective 1 - Increase knowledge about the common turtle;

Objective 2 - Promote the quality of (breeding) habitats;

Objective 3 - Develop a sustainable and adaptive hunting strategy;

Objective 4 - Promote international co-operation;

Objective 5 - Develop a communication strategy.

ProROLA-Year 1 essentially focused on objectives 1 and 5 with activities to prepare and train teams in the field, refine and optimise approaches in fieldwork, test equipment to collect data while the common turtle is in our country. The ProROLA website was developed, as well as an application for collecting citizen science data and monitoring wild turtle populations and their possible hunting exploitation as part of ongoing projects.
