Participant 5: Universidad de Chile, Industrial Engineering Department (DII)

General Information

The Department of Industrial Engineering is part of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Faculty of University of Chile, the biggest and most important centre of engineering and science of the country. It dictates programs of quality to post-degree level and courses in the areas of management and applied economy. In this centre high level investigations are carried out, which contribute to the improvement of the country's companies and institutions. DII has developed optimisation models for forest management that has worldwide recognition.

In 2007 was created The Complex Engineering Systems Institute (ISCI, Instituto Sistemas Complejos de Ingeniería), a scientific research centre focused on studying and developing models and solutions for large and complex problems, integrating different fields of engineering, economics and management.. One of the distinctive features of this centre is the continuum created from theory to application, achieving relevant and novel results in both extremes, which allow on one side to publish in the most important scientific journals, and on the other, implement concrete solutions in the private and public sectors.

Main research areas

The main research of the Department of Industrial Engineering is divided in 3 areas: Economics in the Applied Economics Centre (CEA), the Management Centre (CEGES) and the Operations Management Centre (CGO). The systemic knowledge resulting of the research carried out in the DII is being applied in fields such as transportation, public policies, modernisation of the State, environment, education and leadership skills, among others.

Key Persons

Dr Andrés Weintraub Pohorille Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Dr Rafael Epstein Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering

International collaboration

Research in DII is giving a high priority with results that translate to an important recognition at national and international levels. This is reflected in the 123 projects that we have carried out in the last 10 years with the support of the Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation, Merllet Foundation, GDN, Inter-American Development Bank., among other national organisations. Furthermore, it has a wide and outstanding international entailment with prestigious academic centres. In addition, personal collaboration between Dr Andrés Weintraub and José G. Borges (ISA) or Carlos Romero (UPM) is constant, giving as a result several highly qualified publications.
