Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) is a comprehensive, innovative research university. Each year Virginia Tech receives significant external support for research, instruction, extension, and public service projects. In fiscal year 2008, the university received 2,263 awards to conduct research. Support for these projects originates from a large base of sponsors. Today, nearly 650 sponsors fund more than 2,500 active projects. Researchers pursue new discoveries in a wide range of engineering, scientific, social science, and creative fields. The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation offers outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs in natural resource sciences in a lively academic community.
Areas of studies include environmental resource management, fisheries and wildlife sciences, forestry, geospatial and environmental analysis, natural resource recreation, urban forestry, wood science and forest products, geography, and international development. From protected areas management and economic policy to forest soil productivity, urbanisation, and genomics, the faculty seek to discover new knowledge and technology to address the global challenges to come.
Dr. Harold Burkhart, University Distinguished Professor, Dr. Thomas Fox, Professor in the area of silviculture and tree nutrition, Dr. Randolph Wynne, Professor in the area of remote sensing and geospatial analysis at VT.
The Department of Forestry at Virginia Tech mainly has personal relations with the other participants of this project. For instance, VT and ISA have worked together for many years in the forest modelling area. An example publication is Tome, M. and H.E. Burkhart. 1989. Distance-dependent competition measures for predicting growth of individual trees. For. Sci. 35:816-831.
