General Information

University of Eastern Finland has been created by the merge of the Universities of Joensuu and Kuopio from January 2010. The Faculty of Science and Forestry is one of the four Faculties in the University and the School of Forest Sciences is within this faculty. The School of Forestry is an internationally renowned research and education centre which produces highly competent and responsible professionals with excellent management skills for forestry and other environmental management fields. The unit has wide experience and proven track record of refereed journals in developing new methodologies for forest inventory, forest data management and planning.

Main research areas

The specialisation options within the forestry science are forest ecology and forest protection, silviculture and forest bioenergy, forest measuration and forest planning, forest economics and forest policy, and forest technology and forest products technology. Among others, the main research priorities are focused on the effects of climate change on forests, multi-objective and participatory forest planning, wood science, forest resource inventory and GIS and forest economy and marketing.

International collaboration

The University of Eastern Finland is an international, research-intensive university with an extensive network of foreign partners. The university has concluded bilateral agreements on cooperation with approximately 70 universities abroad. The Faculty of Sciences and Forestry is an active international education and research centre. The non-degree study programme Environmental Science and Forestry is especially aimed at exchange students with the teaching conducted in English. It coordinates the Master of Science in European Forestry which was recently awarded by the highly prestigious Erasmus Mundus MSc programme (EC).
