General Information

The School of Agriculture (ISA - Instituto Superior de Agronomia), is one of the faculties of the Technical University of Lisbon (Universidade Técnica de Lisboa), one of the top-ranked Universities of Portugal with long experience on education at University level, both at under and post-graduate level. Furthermore, the Centre of Forest Studies (CEF), which is hosted at ISA, is presently considered the top research institution in forest sciences in Portugal, including the top national researchers on forest growth modelling, forest management modelling and operations research and computer science applied to forest management.

Main research areas

The ISA, as a whole, covers a wide range of subjects, such as silviculture, forest inventory and growth and yield modelling, forest management modelling and decision support systems, tree ecophysiology and genetics, forest hydrology, carbon fluxes in forest systems; fire ecology and post-fire management, forest entomology, among others. CEF is as smaller research centre within ISA dedicated to university education and multi-disciplinary research in forest environment and environmental science, with strong focus on forest modelling and operational research.

Key Persons

Dr. Jordi Garcia-Gonzalo (SADRI - coordinator) researcher specialized in forest planning and DSS; Susana Barreiro (SADRI - Post-doc) researcher specialized in growth and yield models and forest simulators; M.Sc Joanna Bachmatiuk (SADRI - Scholar) specialized in applied mathematics; Dr. José G. Borges, associate professor of forest management planning; Dr. Margarida Tomé, professor of forest inventory and forest models; Dr. Dr. João Palma, researcher on forest modelling, forest planning and GIS.

International collaboration

CEF is strongly committed to international collaboration and exchange in its areas of expertise and participate/coordinate several international research projects, mainly funded by EU and Portuguese government. Among others, ISA has an important role on the following international projects: Forest biorefineries–added value from chemicals and polymers by new integrated separation, fractionation and upgrading technologies, (AFORE) and “Models for Adaptive Forest Management” (MOTIVE) integrated in the EU 7th Framework Programme; “Tools for sustainability impact assessment of forestry-wood chain” (EFORWOOD) integrated in the EU 6th Framework Programme. In addition, CEF is participating in different COST-Actions as for example ECHOES (Expected Climate Change and Options for European Silviculture), FP0804 FORSYS COST action (Forest Management Decision Support Systems) and FP0603 COST action (Forest models for research and decision support in sustainable forest management).
